Blue Buffalo Dog Food Review

This product, the Blue Buffalo Co Blue Wilderness, contains only a very small amount of grain – always a positive point, since grains are not a natural part of a canine diet at all. More and more commercial pet foods are now starting to eliminate grains mostly or completely, which is a very positive move towards natural food that is much more beneficial to dogs than many traditional foods. As a general rule of thumb, the fewer grains contained in the food, the better it is likely to be for the dog.

This food not only contains a minimal amount of grains, but it is also completely free from controversial and/or low quality ingredients which so often make an appearance in many dog foods. Pet owners who want to make sure that they are feeding only good quality, nutritious, safe and healthy ingredients to their dogs are advised to always check the ingredients list on the packaging, where the manufacturer must, by law, list all the product's ingredients in order of weight.

The first one or two of these ingredients should be a meat product, as a high meat content makes for a largely meat-based diet, which is what will be most beneficial to the dog's health. This food, Blue Buffalo Co Blue Wilderness, actually contains named meat products as five of the first six ingredients. The first of these, however, should probably be placed a bit further down the list than it is, due to the fact that it is meat inlusive of its water content – and the water content accounts for around 80% of the ingredient itself. If you were to take away the water content, the weight of this meat ingredient would obviously be significantly less, so its position at the head of the list is slightly misleading.

However, the fact that it is then followed by four more meat meal ingredients makes up for this. A food with as many as five meat based products so high in the list of ingredients can safely be viewed as having a sufficiently high meat content. The only doubt about this comes from the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the food, but in general this is a high quality dog food, with a good range of fruits and probiotics, and potato starch providing the major source of carbohydrates.

Probably more suitable for adult dogs (especially in larger breeds) owing to the high protein content of the food, Blue Buffalo Co Blue Wilderness seems like an all round healthy, nutrient-rich dog food providing the essential mix of ingredients needed for a healthy canine diet.
