Nature's Variety Instinct Dog Food Review

An excellent high quality dog food for adult dogs is the Nature's Variety “Instinct” range. These foods are completely free from grains, which is generally a very positive thing if you're searching for a dog food that provides a canine diet that is as natural as possible. Grain is obviously not a natural part of a dog's diet, and in fact many grains used in commercial dog foods are extremely low quality products which are simply there as “fillers” to bulk out the food. Often, grains in dog foods contain no nutritional value for the dog whatsoever, and more often than not can actually be harmful to the dog, causing allergies or interfering with the digestive system. It's great to see more and more good quality dog foods which completely omit grains from the ingredients list, and the Nature's Variety “Instinct” foods do just that.

Instead of grains, the main source of carbohydrates in these foods is tapioca. In the Chicken Meal Formula, for example, tapioca is the second ingredient on the list, providing starch content with its primary purpose as a thickener. Tapioca as the major carbohydrate source will be a very positive thing to owners of dogs with food allergies linked to potatoes, and also dogs suffering from arthritis.

This range of foods seems to have an excellent meat content. The first three ingredients of Duck and Turkey Meal Formula, for example, are named meat products in the form of meal. Not only that, but there's another meat meal ingredient at number eight on the list, and a bunch of extra meat ingredients further down the list. Although you can never be certain of the exact meat content of a dog food, it's fairly safe to say that this one is extremely good in that regard. The Rabbit Meal Formula, too, has meat meal products as the first two ingredients, as well as other meat ingredients further down the list, and the Chicken Meal Formula has meat meal ingredients at number one and five on the list. The Chicken Meal Formula, incidentally, also includes fish meal among the main ingredients – this is a good, recognized source of Omega 3/6 OFAs.

The Nature's Variety “Instinct” meals contain lots of healthy and beneficial ingredients such as a good range of probiotics and lots of fruits and vegetables. The only concern about the products, perhaps, would be the inclusion of chicken fat – particularly since it comes in as high as number four on the ingredients list in the Chicken Meal Formula. Fat in the top four ingredients of dog foods is thought to be a negative point against the food, as a potential factor in increasing the likelihood of bloat in larger dogs. Added to this is the presence of citric acid as a preservative, which is not necessarily a problem as long as you are aware of it, as it means that the food should not be pre-moistened before feeding – this would also add to the risk of bloat.

However, these are relatively minor issues with a range of foods that is, over all, very high quality and an excellent choice for adult dogs. You can buy it online here.
