Info on Puppy Food

It's important to feed your puppy on a specially formulated puppy diet, since young dogs have completely different dietary/nutritional requirements than adult dogs. Feeding a regular adult dog food to your puppy won't give him the high levels of protein, vitamins and minerals that he needs in order to develop properly and grow up to be strong and healthy.

There are plenty of commercial puppy foods to choose from, lots of which come from very reputable brands. Here are a few examples of the puppy foods on the market today.

Champion Pet Foods Acana Puppy And Junior food contains a good range of quality ingredients, including whole eggs and a healthy selection of fruits and vegetables. The grains in the food, too, are good quality – oats and rice – and there's a good range of probiotics. This is all good news, when choosing a puppy food, as you want to ensure that your puppy is getting the high levels of nutrients required by young dogs for their growth and development.

The only slight concern with the Acana Puppy and Junior formula is that the meat content overall is probably not as high as a first glance at the list of ingredients might make you think. This is because some of the meat ingredients are listed inclusive of water content, so really they are much lower amounts than it might first appear from their position on the ingredients list. However, a meat meal product does take the number one position on the list, so we can be fairly confident that the meat content is quite good, if not as excellent as it first appears. A way around this might be to supplement the food with real meat, but this is up to the individual dog owner's discretion.

Nutrapet California Natural Chicken Meal and Rice Puppy food, on the other hand, contains only one meat ingredient, so the meat content could probably be higher – but it is one of only three main ingredients, all of which appear to be of high quality. This is good news for dogs who suffer from food allergies, as many of these allergies are brought about by inferior ingredients in their food. It means that the food would also be good for puppies with sensitive stomachs or digestion problems. The three main ingredients are meat meal, rice, and whole grain, and the rest are vitamins, minerals and oils. This one is definitely worth a try if your puppy is showing allergic reactions to other foods. Also available is the Nutrapet Natural Lamb Meal and Rice Puppy food, which again is an allergy formula with a pleasingly short and simple ingredients list. The two major ingredients are lamb meal and brown rice, and the product seems to contain a great deal more meat than a lot of allergy formula foods tend to have.

Finally, there's Performatrin Ultra Puppy Chicken and Rice, which again seems to have a good high meat content, with the additional benefit of a fish meal ingredient. With a great range of probiotics, fruit, vegetables and healthy oils, this is a really good quality puppy food – the only concern being that with its rice (two types), oatmeal, barley and rye, it might be a little heavy on the grains.
